Freshman checklist

Once you’ve been admitted to CBS, what do you do?

  1. Attend the CBS Dean’s Reception (encouraged)

This event will take place March 13, 2009. Learn about the College of Biological Sciences and what we have to offer at this special event. Take a campus tour, attend a seminar to learn more about the College, and speak with representatives from CBS departments, student clubs, Housing and Residential Life, Admissions, and Financial Aid.

  2. Schedule Orientation Dates (required)

Summer orientation will help you become better acquainted with the University of Minnesota and your new college. You will learn about the academic programs and services available in CBS and course requirements for the seven CBS majors. Most importantly, you will register for your first semester classes!

  3. Take Placement Exams (required)

Taking placement tests in chemistry and math is critical for incoming CBS students. Results of these tests will help you choose the right classes for your first semester. Complete both tests at least two weeks before attending orientation. If you plan to continue your studies of Spanish, French, or German, you should also complete the Language Placement Test before orientation.

  4. Complete New Student Survey (required)

Tell us about yourself! Your responses to the New Student Survey will help your advisor prepare for orientation.

  5. Schedule Nature of Life Dates (required)

The Nature of Life is a required course for all new students. The program will help you learn what it means to be a 21st century biologist and introduce you to your academic peers and CBS faculty.

  6. Explore the Class of 2012 Portal (coming soon)
  7. Have transcripts from other colleges sent to U of M Admissions
  8. Attend Welcome Week
