Majors & courses

Please note: Beginning in Fall 2007, CBS majors are required to complete the new Foundations of Biology sequence, Biology 2002 and 2003/2004. Learn how this curriculum change affects you.

The seven CBS majors offered span molecules to ecosystems and health sciences to environmental sciences. A degree in CBS has always opened the door to a variety of career opportunities in health care, research, education, government agencies, and conservation. There has never been a better time to major in biology than today.

CBS majors prepare students equally well for admission to most graduate and professional programs in health care, research, and science education. All provide a strong foundation in math, chemistry, physics, and general biology, as well as more advanced courses in biochemistry, genetics, and ecology. The academic advisers in CBS encourage students to explore each major and choose the subject most interesting to them.

An emphasis in life sciences can also be built into an interdisciplinary major for those students who choose to design their own major at the U of M.
